With widgets, you can peek at some of the things that matter to you most via a small space at the side of your desktop, without opening a dedicated app associated with that content, or even going on your phone. You can summon it at any time with  Windows Key  and  W  on your keyboard, or hover to the left side of the Taskbar, and click on the weather icon.
